I am happy to learn that Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology, Faculty of Dental Sciences, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow is running an awareness program “Jan Jagriti Abhiyan.”
Keeping children safe is a shared responsibility and should remain a top priority for all of us. Child abuse is a worldwide public health problem. It is a vindictive and terrible occurrence and a serious breach of a child’s rights to health and protection. It also prevents their physical and psychosocial development. Is has assumed even a great importance today as an undissolved humanity problem.

I am happy to know that the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Faculty of Dental Sciences, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow has commenced an awareness programme ‘Janjagriti Abhiyan’.
Campaigning to make the community more aware of the importance of relevant issues is essential for the progress of society. Such campaigns play a pivotal role in the success of various health and social initiatives. I am confident that ‘Janjagriti Abhiyan’ would be successful in achieving its objectives.

HON. VC (KGMU)’S MESSAGE
I congratulate the entire team of FODS, KGMU for taking the initiative of highlighting the concern over the mammoth issue of forensic odontology and child abuse/neglect. I acknowledge the far sightedness of my faculty to organise the most relevant and researched topic on forensic in the recent decade and also for holistic approach covering each aspect of forensic sciences The science of Forensic Odontology has made giant strides offlate and I support the faculty for taking keen interest in this area and conducting awareness programs and camps for the general population. I am confident that the deliberations would help all of us to acieve the goal and to continue with more accuracy and positive identification. According to a recent survey, 75% of child abuse victims are of the tender age below 3. The problem not only takes a toll over the physical and emotional well being of the sufferer but also hampers the spiritual growth tremendously such that the child doesn’t lead a normal life in the later stages as well. Being a medical practitioner I can easily comprehend the graveness of this problem and suport the faculty to work in the direction of this noble cause. The vulnerable section of the society, the children, are most susceptible to fall prey to the brutal act of some emotionally weak people. Children hesitate to speak about their experiences of abuse but if we make their guardians aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse, they may view the child with a more wider perspective and become more considerate and patient towards the problems encountered by their wards.

Odontology amongst police, medical, dental & judicial officers to draw full benefits of this science. There is great scope of development of this science as a separate discipline in dentistry in India. It gives me immense pleasure to see that the academia is actively involved in spreading the awareness on socially relevant topics of child abuse/ neglect, malnutrition, precancer and cancer screening and hygiene.
Although these issues may appear vague but when it comes to underprivileged, illiterate and young children, the problem becomes grave. The infants and others who face this crime of abuse in their lifetime grow up into under confident, shy, aggressive and introvert individual which is a sign of unsound mental and physical growth and development. I am delighted to see the growing interest of medical and dental healthcare professionals in a burning social issue of child abuse. I fully support the team of the department of oral pathology and microbiology, FODS, KGMU for attending this issue with grimness and maturity.

In Indian families, care and protection of the children has been an intricate part. A closely bonded patriarchal family that is meant to look after its children well has rarely had the realization that children are individuals bestowed with their own rights by virtue of being human. While the Constitution of India guarantees many fundamental rights to the children, the approach to ensure the fulfillment of these rights was more needs based rather than rights based.
We are pleased to declare that we are dealing with problem of child abuse/neglect, malnutrition, hygiene and health issues on a big level. We are conducting awareness programs, screening programs for the upliftment of the vulnerable people of the society (low socio economic strata, weaker section of the society, female child, infants and adolescent). We aim to educate the common man on the subjects that we refrain from discussing in public. Child abuse is a hot topic gaining attention from researchers all across the globe. If we help children and their caretakers to understand the problem child abuse in depth we may be able to curtail the problem to a great extent. We are commencing the program Jan Jagriti Abhyaan and educating the people on these issues for public and societal relevance. We are happy to announce that UPCST has been extending generous support for this noble deed and we can’t thank them enough for the same.
Enlightening on the issues of malnutrition, child abuse/neglect, hand and oral hygiene we can bring a major change in the way people address these problems and look forward to solving them. The screening and awareness program will help to enhance the understanding of families, communities, civil society organizations and the state; and pave the way for more informed programming and further research to strengthen protection of children.
